The secret ingredient in this Ultimate Grilled Cheese isnโ€™t just the cheese. Itโ€™s the salted Truffle butter. Completely optional but totally worth it. The three-cheese blend made of cheddar, mozzarella, and gruyere, adds flavor, stretch, and a sweet nuttiness that results in a cheese loverโ€™s dream!

Duh? The cheese? No, but really, the cheese is the main event. And in my opinion, itโ€™s so important which cheeses you choose to use, even though you can experiment with any cheese you like. Hey, Iโ€™m not going to blame you for leading the way in the most advanced cheese combos in grilled cheese. The selection of cheese (listed below) is strong in flavor, stretchy (mandatory), and has a slightly nutty sweetness!

What does Ultimate Grilled Cheese taste like?

Cheese

I used three types of cheese in this recipe. The cheddar provides a sharp flavor, the mozzarella, that stringy stretchiness and the gruyere adds a sweet nuttiness. You can use any cheese blend you like, I would just suggest shredding or grating it yourself rather than buying it already grated.

Bread

Any type of bread will work for this recipe. You can go for a rustic style bread like a pane de casa, or a regular sandwich bread. Just make sure the bread is toast or thick slice.

Butter

The butter needs to be good quality, it needs to be salted too. I used salted truffle butter from New Zealand which has a high fat percentage and is richer in flavor.

What are the ingredients I need for Ultimate Grilled Cheese?

This recipe is all about using good ingredients. There are just a handful of ingredients needed, so go for the good stuff. It results in the creamiest, tastiest, and ultimate grilled cheese.

Cheddar cheese – I would recommend grating all the cheese yourself. Store bought cheese can have additives to prevent it from clumping together. The cheddar gives you the ultimate flavor boost in the cheese filling.

Mozzarella – this cheese gives you the ultimate stretch. Make sure you use the low moisture kind and not the kind that is soft.

Gruyere cheese – this is a French cheese, similar in flavor to cheddar and swiss cheese. Kind of an in between. Not as sharp as cheddar, but not as sweet as swiss. It gives the cheese a nice sweetness while still making it tasty.

Bread – Any type of bread will work for this recipe. You can go for a rustic style bread like a pane de casa, or a regular sandwich bread. Just make sure the bread is toast or thick slice.

Butter – The butter needs to be good quality; it needs to be salted too. I used salted truffle butter from New Zealand which has a high fat percentage and is richer in flavor.

  1. Butter both sides of each bread slice with. I used truffle butter for some added flavor, but you can use regular salted butter if you wish.
  2. Add a large skillet to medium heat. Not too hot or the bread will burn before the cheese melts. Toast all the bread on one side until perfectly golden. You can also do this in an oven grill as well.

My Top Tips!

  • When toasting the bread make sure your skillet is on medium heat, so the bread doesnโ€™t burn before the cheese is melted.
  • You can also toast the bread and make these under a grill or broiler on a low heat setting.
  • Shred or grate your cheese yourself as pre-shredded cheese can have additives that stop the cheese from clumping up in the packet. This recipe is all about good quality ingredients!
  • And itโ€™s for that reason that you donโ€™t want to skimp on quality! There are only a few ingredients in this recipe, and they all rely on each other for the ultimate grilled cheese experience. Make sure you buy the good cheese, the good butter with a higher fat percentage and the good bread.
  • Truffle butter: I used truffle butte because I love the flavor. But if you canโ€™t find it, or donโ€™t like it, you can use a good quality salted butter.
