Colourful sprinkles

Nick’s favorite thingโ€ฆ

I absolutely love the fact that you can make sprinkles at home. I mean for several reasons!

  1. You can choose which colors you want
  2. You can make them any shape you like
  3. Theyโ€™re easy to make
  4. They hold their shape in baked goods
  5. They donโ€™t bleed their color.

What does it taste like?

These sprinkles are vanilla flavors. Theyโ€™re crunchy and crispy. The great thing is though that you can flavor them too using artificial flavorings.

What are the ingredients I need for How To Make Sprinkles At Home?

Powdered sugar – these sprinkles are sweetened using powdered sugar. Use pure icing sugar if you can. You can use softened as well if you wish.

Egg whites – The egg whites need to be fresh. You can use pasteurized egg whites if you wish.

Corn syrup / glucose syrup – these two ingredients will work in this recipe.

Vanilla extract – always use good quality vanilla extract. A little goes a long way. And you only want to use a little in this recipe to prevent it from going

Gel food color – you can use any food gel you like. I would not recommend using liquid food dye.

Instructions

Rainbow Sprinkles

  • To a large mixing bowl, run 1 1/2 cups of the powdered sugar through a sieve. Add the corn syrup, egg white, 2 1/2 tsp cold water and vanilla extract. Use an electric hand mixer to beat until smooth. If youโ€™re making the egg free version leave the egg whiteout and use 2 1/2 tbsp of cold water instead.
  • Add the remaining powdered sugar (sifted). Use a spatula to mix until smooth but thick.
  • Split the mixture into as many small mixing bowls as you like depending on how, many colors youโ€™re making. Add the desired amount of food gel colorings. I reckon starting off with just one drop and then mix before adding more. You can go darker but not lighter! Add to a piping bag, snip a small bit off the end. Pipe into a baking tray lined with baking paper. Allow to set overnight before using a knife or bench scraper to cut down to sprinkle sized strips!

Notes

Storage
Sprinkles can be stored in an airtight container for up to a month. If youโ€™re using egg whites, up to a week in the fridge.
Vanilla extract
Don't be tempted to add more vanilla extract for a stronger flavor as it will discolour the sprinkles. instead use a really good quality vanilla extract. A little goes a long way and you'll end up with brightly coloured sprinkles.
